A Swiss way of spending summer weekends: Bernese Oberland - July 2014

In September 2013, I met some of my European collegues for a meeting on the beautiful island of Sardinia, and while enjoying some free time at the beach, we somehow ended up talking about going for a hike in the Swiss mountains. I immediately offered to organise this, and after some months of planning, we went hiking for three days in the wonderful Bernese Oberland.
Our tour started in Adelboden, we took the cable car up to the Engstligenalp and then walked via Chindbettipass and Rote Totz Lücke to the Lämmerenhütte, where we spent the first night. On the second day we walked to the Gemmipass and on towards Berghotel Schwarenbach for the second night. As it was raining on our third day, we walked on to Sunnbüel and then took the cable car down to Kandersteg instead of walking back down. It was a fantastic tour, a lot of incredible views, sun and fresh air, great spanish chorizo as a motivating snack for our breaks and comfortable places for the nights. While the Lämmerenhütte is part of the network of huts the Swiss Alpine Club offers to hikers, the Berghotel Schwarenbach is a "real" hotel with standards a bit higher than in the huts (showers!).

Summer up there (above 2000 meters above sea level) means that temperatures are ok but not hot and because June this year was not particularly warm we still found a lot of snow, which made our first day a bit more adventurous as we had to traverse several snowfields, some of them quite steep. Not everyone in the group had done this before, but they all passed their mountain goat exams with flying colours! Speaking of animals: we saw ibexes and marmots, even young ones, absolutely adorable - they belong to my all-time-favourites when it comes to animals.

But now for the photos of the first two days - I didn't take any on the third day as it was raining and I wanted my camera to be safe and dry in my backpack...

Day 1: Engstligenalp - Chindbettipass - Rote Totz Lücke - Lämmerenhütte

Day 2: Lämmerenhütte - Gemmipass - Berghotel Schwarenbach
